What we do
RFI is a joint partnership initiative of the self-administrative cantons of Afrîn, Kobanî and Cizîre in northern Syria (Rojava) and Finnish strategic and program partners in the fields of humanitarian aid, reconstruction, sustainable social and economic development, civil society, democracy and peace-building.
The Rojava Initiative also facilitates development partnerships between the self-administrative cantons and international governments and civil society organisations. In addition to mobilising resources for urgent humanitarian aid, we focus especially on longer-term reconstruction and development projects that will have lasting value in the post-war period. In 2014 we have organised eight delegations from Rojava's cantons to Finland to build cooperation with government officials, civil society organisations, private sector companies and universities, mobilised humanitarian aid for Rojava, facilitated pilot projects between Rojava and Finnish and international civil society organisations, and carried out information work to raise awareness about the situation in Rojava. Who we are
Ilkka Jaakkola, founder and development manager of the Rojava Initiative, has many years of experience in the region, including long-term programs related to forestry, human rights and social economy.
